Agents of SHIELD – Eye-Spy

October 15, 2013

My reviews tomorrow might be up a little late, since I’ll be having lunch with a friend. And I may or may not do an Iron Man 3 review on Thursday, since I finally got around to watching it on Saturday. And then next week I’ll probably get back to a more normal routine. Anyway, Agents of SHIELD.

The quick synopsis: Some lady’s been stealing diamonds. The team figures out it’s a former SHIELD agent, a former protege of Coulson. She’s got a camera eye she gets orders through. The team captures her, disables the eye, happy endings all around.

I liked this episode. One of the things I liked is that it’s more of a straight spy vs. spy story than the other three have been. There’s no questions of secrecy vs. transparency. There’s no “trust the government” message. While SHIELD are absolutely the good guys here, beyond any doubt, they’re not keeping anything from the public, and the bad guys aren’t pushing for information to be free. The fact that the episode has no uncomfortable message makes it immensely better.

Also good: All the characters get something to do, and they’re all handled really well. Even Skye is actually bearable here. Her hacking skills come into play effectively, and she’s very competent without it coming across as showboating. Ward doesn’t do a whole lot, but he gets a couple funny moments. Fitz and Simmons being deeply uncomfortable with having to remove a woman’s eyeball is good. May kicks some serious ass. And Coulson shows his smarts, helping the woman figure out everything she knows about her handler.

There’s plenty of good humour, and some cool action. The story is interesting, with all sorts of mysteries going on. And the group who was controlling the woman is unknown at the end, setting up future episodes.

So this is the best episode so far. The series has been getting better as it goes along. I’m hoping that improvement continues.
